Nordisk Netværk: MovECE

2023 –

The MovECE (Movement in Early Childhood Education) is a network established in 2020. The network brings together eight partners from five Nordic countries with a shared ambition: to promote physical activity and movement in ECEC (Early Childhood Education and Care).

MovECE has published two studies:

  1. Study 1: A comparison of five Nordic national policy documents within ECEC. The results indicate that the requirements for movement are inadequately formulated and described (Read the study here)

  2. Study 2: An exploration of the integration of movement and physical activity (MoPA) within Early Childhood Teacher Education (ECTE) showing large differences and room for improvement (Read the study here).

Nordic Collaboration and Study Module
The network has received funding from Nordplus Higher Education for the collaboration and development of a shared Nordic study module aimed to improve Nordic ECTE programs.

In 2025, MovECE gathered in Denmark for the first pilot of the intensive study program, bringing together students from all partner countries. A revised version of the program will be hosted by the University of Jyväskylä in 2026.

Impact
MovECE aims to

  • Produce relevant knowledge on the inclusion of movement in ECTE policy documents.
  • Practical insights and deliverables to ensure comprehensive and sustainable impact.
  • Promote intercultural competence among the participants in the network.

Insights from the first study module in Denmark: Play and Learning Across the Nordic Countries

In the spring 2025, UCL’s Campus in Svendborg hosted the course “Movement in Early Childhood Education Across Nordic Countries.”

A total of 16 students and 12 teachers from Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark gathered in Denmark. The course included both indoor and outdoor learning activities and explored various perspectives on movement and motor development in preschool children.

The programme featured academic presentations, hands-on exercises, and plenty of cross-border inspiration. The course was organised by eight educational and research institutions with support from Nordplus Higher Education.

In this video, you can watch a visual recap of the course.
